“Assistive Products for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.” Johnny Gallagos, WCI 
Guest speaker for March 11, 2010 is Johnny Gallegos, from Weitbrecht Communications Incorporated (WCI) who will be speaking on “Assistive Products for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.” Johnny shares a most interesting and inspiring story of his journey on becoming a “people person.” Mr. Gallegos is a recent graduate of California State University-Northridge majoring in Deaf Studies with a concentration in Sign Language Interpretation.    Johnny recently signed up with the Big Brother and Big Sister Organization to become a mentor for a “little brother.”  He says that he’s really excited for this opportunity because “I have always wanted to do something, but never had the time to do it.”  Over the past two years, Johnny has been connecting with his faith and was baptized as a Christian.  He looks forward to his first mission trip this summer.

Our speaker is the featured Press Telegram newspaper columnist with his experiences in hearing loss and dealing with hearing aids; followed by some of his recommendations to those contemplating getting them.  This presentation is part of Hearing Loss Association of America's out-reach to the hearing loss community.  See you there!

Roberta Smith, California Telephone Access Program
Roberta, Outreach Specialist with the California Telephone Access Program (CTAP) is the featured speaker for the February.  Ms. Smith will be speaking on “Amazing Phones: Free!” for people who have difficulty hearing, seeing, moving, speaking, or remembering.   Ms. Smith is also hard of hearing herself and shares many of the same experiences that  the members have experienced.

 “Captions, Captions, Captions” by Nanci Linke-Ellis.   On the California HLA Board of Directors, Nancy is a member of the Santa Monica Chapter and it’s President.  She is very involved in captioning for movies, theater, etc.  Meetings at the Long Beach/Lakewood chapter have been captioned for the past two years and made possible from a grant from the Boeing’s Employee Community Fund.

 Lorraine Fanizza of Hearing Promotions.

        Lorraine began researching and found certain hearing devices that made a huge difference in her life.  It was at this time that she created her own company, Hearing Promotions, and offers a discount on hearing devices for about 15 years for other hard of hearing people. 

        In Lorraine’s presentation, Hearing Experience, she will be demonstrate the new, upgraded Motiva, a portable hearing system.  This is an opportunity to learn how to hear better, even in background noise or distance from the speaker.  She invites attendees to see how they can hear TV, family, and friends anywhere.  Hear while on vacation, in a car, your tour guide, in restaurants, classrooms, meetings and much more.  Lorraine encourages attendees to “bring your toughest hearing challenges and let’s get them solved.!”

 "Veterans with Hearing Loss (video), AND, special presentation by CAROL A. ZIZZ, Au.D of Long Beach Veterans Administration on their support + Q&A.

“Veterans with Hearing Loss” (VHL), a six minute DVD, will be shown.  The DVD explains how the Rochester Institute of Technology’s project (RIT) offers educational benefits for veterans with hearing loss. RIT/NTID (National Technical Institute for the Deaf) is partnering with HLAA in an effort to provide information to service men and women who would benefit from the access and support services offered to veterans with hearing loss. The partners are offering a one year membership to HLAA to any veterans who enroll at RIT.  Further information may be found at www.rit.edu/ntid/veterans.
